Master of Arts in Writing
Offered Online or On-Campus
In the MA in Writing program, you’ll learn the craft of writing from active professional writers in an intensive workshop-focused approach that includes summer residency options in locations around the world. Students can choose from a concentration in fiction or nonfiction and tailor their learning to their unique career goals through a variety of writing electives and workshop courses in options such as travel writing, poetry, memoir, and experimental fiction.
Some of our graduates enter careers in journalism, teaching, law, or corporate writing. Others go on to author nonfiction, short stories, novels, and other works. No matter your goals, you will graduate with advanced writing skills, a portfolio of complete writings, and a deep understanding of the writing and publishing worlds.
Master of Arts in Teaching Writing
We believe the best writing teachers are also writers themselves. The MA in Teaching Writing program helps teachers in all disciplines and at all levels—kindergarten through university—learn proven, practical ways to teach writing to their students while exploring their own writing.
Our program helps you bring proven theories, practical methods and best practices into your classroom, and can help you become a leader in teaching writing in your school or district.
By offering flexible, interactive, asynchronous, customized learning, the program provides a model for teaching writing and a forum where all teachers can learn and grow together in a community of teachers and writers.
You can also pursue your own writing interests and improve your writing abilities through interdisciplinary coursework options such as brain research, science writing, and film and media studies.
